Air fryer capacity, explained without the marketing

Air fryer capacity, explained without the marketing

Air fryer capacity is quoted in quarts, and the figure describes the empty volume of the basket. It does not describe how much food you can cook, because an air fryer works by moving hot air around what is inside it. Fill the basket and you have built a small, poorly ventilated oven.

Useful capacity is roughly half to two-thirds of the quoted figure. That is not a defect in the machine or a trick in the listing — it is how the cooking method works — but it does mean the number on the box needs translating before you buy.

What each size actually feeds

2 to 3 quarts

One person, or a side dish for two. Enough for a single chicken breast, a portion of chips, or reheating yesterday’s pizza. Small enough to leave on a worktop permanently, which matters more than it sounds: an air fryer in a cupboard is an air fryer you do not use.

4 to 5 quarts

The most common household size. Two portions comfortably, three at a squeeze if you are willing to shake the basket halfway through. This is the size most people should buy and the size most people talk themselves out of on the grounds that bigger must be better.

6 to 8 quarts

Four portions, or a small whole chicken. The trade-off is footprint and preheat time — a larger chamber takes longer to come up to temperature, so a quick reheat stops being quick. Worth it for a family, wasteful for a couple.

Dual-basket models

Two independent chambers, usually quoted as a combined figure. An “8 quart” dual basket is two 4 quart baskets, not one 8 quart one, and you cannot cook anything larger than a single basket. The advantage is cooking two things at two temperatures at once, which is genuinely useful and completely separate from capacity.

The measurement nobody checks

External dimensions matter more than basket volume, and they are usually further down the listing. An air fryer needs clearance: most manufacturers specify several inches behind and above the unit for the exhaust. Push one against a wall under a cabinet and you will cook the underside of the cabinet.

Measure three things before ordering: the worktop depth, the height to the underside of your wall units, and whether the basket can be pulled fully out where the machine will stand. That third one catches people whose air fryer sits under a shelf with two inches of clearance.

Programmes, and how many you will use

A machine advertising eleven presets has, in practice, a temperature dial and a timer with eleven labels on it. The presets are combinations of the two. They are convenient rather than transformative, and a machine with four presets is not four times worse than one with sixteen.

What is worth having is a preset that genuinely changes behaviour — a dehydrate setting that runs a very low temperature for hours, or a proper broil element rather than a hot fan. Those are functional differences. “Fries”, “chicken” and “vegetables” are not.

Cleaning, which decides whether you keep using it

Almost every air fryer basket is coated. That coating is the part that wears out, and it wears out faster under metal utensils, abrasive sponges and dishwasher detergent. Check whether the manufacturer says the basket is dishwasher safe, and then consider washing it by hand anyway — a coated basket washed by hand outlasts a coated basket put through 200 dishwasher cycles by a wide margin.

Removable crisper plates are worth looking for. A basket with a fixed plate traps grease underneath it in a place you cannot reach.

Power draw, and your kitchen circuit

Most household air fryers pull between 1,200 and 1,800 watts. That is a kettle. If your kitchen worktop sockets are on one circuit and you routinely run a kettle, a toaster and a microwave simultaneously, adding an air fryer to the same circuit is how you find out where the breaker is. Worth a moment’s thought in an older house.

A practical short list

  • Buy for the number of people you cook for on a normal weeknight, not for Christmas.
  • Assume useful capacity is about 60 per cent of the quoted quarts.
  • Measure the height under your cabinets and allow clearance for the exhaust.
  • Prefer a removable crisper plate and a basket you are willing to hand wash.
  • Ignore the preset count. Look at whether any preset does something a dial cannot.

Asking before you buy

Every air fryer listed on this site states its capacity and its external dimensions, because the second one is what determines whether it works in your kitchen. If a listing is missing a measurement you need, the counter in National City is on the phone during opening hours and can go and measure the box.

Common questions

Can I put foil or baking paper in an air fryer?

Only under food, never covering the whole basket. The machine works by circulating air through the perforations; blocking them turns it into a slow, badly ventilated oven and can send loose paper into the element.

Why does my air fryer smoke?

Usually fat from an earlier session on the element or in the drawer below the crisper plate. Clean both. If you are cooking something fatty, a spoonful of water in the drawer stops the drippings from smoking.

Does a dual-basket model cook twice as much?

It cooks two different things at once, which is genuinely useful, but neither basket is larger than a single-basket model of the same quoted size. An 8-quart dual basket cannot hold anything bigger than 4 quarts.
